PINK, Kerry.

Winds of Change: a history of Woolnorth.

Van Diemen's Land Company Timaru, NZ 2003 viii, 248pp, well illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, b&w illustrations, maps. Laminated pictorial papered boards. Very good. ISBN ***Occupying the very north-western corner of Tasmania, 'Woolnorth' was established in 1829 by - and is still owned by - the Van Diemen's Land Company. Its history has all the elements of early Vandemonian/Tasmanian history: conflict with (and brutality towards) aborigines; convict and indentured labour; conflict with the Lieutenant-Governor in Hobart Town; and the difficulties (natural and political) of establishing an isolated agricultural enterprise in the wilderness. The much-reduced property is still owned by the Company and now runs dairy cattle, as well as being home to an important air quality monitoring station and a large windfarm.
