Eardley-Wilmot in 1846 by denying him a quorum in the Legislative Council in 1846. He held the Premiership of Tasmania briefly in 1857, but his talents (and temperament) were more suited to opposition than to government. He stayed in Parliament - earning the nick-name 'The Old Member' - until 1872, and became something of a hero to the young liberals of the 1890s. (See ADB, 1.)
