Von STIEGLITZ, K.R. (ed).
Edward Markham's Van Diemen's Land Journal 1833; with six historical essays.
Author? Launceston 1952 60pp, illus. Stapled in stiff wrappers. Very good. ISBN ***Markham's manuscript journal is in the Mitchell Library - here it fills 19 pages, commencing 17 March 1883, when he departed Gravesend on board 'Warrior', and quickly moves to Van Diemen's Land. Markham toured the island, but spent only seven months there, departing for New Zealand in February 1834. His brief journal comments on the places he passed through, some of the leading colonists, and the colony's whaling industry. If he is to be believed, he took a couple of remarkable liberties at Governor Arthur's table during 'a dull dinner'. The booklet also includes essays by Karl von Stieglitz on Lt-Governors Collins, Davey, Sorell & Arthur; Port Arthur and the Blacks & Lieut Jeffreys.
