Important gilt guards on cover, 5 raised bands and gilt tools on back, gilt edges. It's a very fine binding. Each volume contains the life and work's commentaries of twelve artists. On the first volume: Henri Baron, Edouard de Beaumont, Charles Delort, Alphonse de Neuville, Edouard Detaille, Gustave Doré, Ernest Duez, Louis Francais, Henri Harpignies, Ferdinand Heilbuth, Eugéne Isabey and Jules Jacquemart. On the second vol.: Gustave Jacquet, Roger Jourdain, Eugéne Lami, Julien Le Blant, Louis Leloir, Maurice Leloir, Madelaine Lemaire, N. de Rothschild, James Tissot, Georges Vibert and Jules Worms. Numerous engravings inside the text and 24 photoengravings by Goupil outside the text. Some foxed stains, but a good copy.
