Second edition of the first voyage, First edition of the secondvoyage, 2 volumes 4to; [viii: title, inscription to Lord Melville, contents, list of plates], xxix (Introduction, Explanation of technical terms), 310p., clxxix (Appendices), 20 engraved maps, plates and charts including 1 double, AND, [viii: title, inscription to Lord Melville, contents, list of plates], xxx, 571p., 39 engraved plates, maps and charts, of which 8 are folding. Uniform contemporary half calf binding with corners, flat spine bands, gilt title and voyage dates on spine, marbled boards. Binding a little rubbed, a little worm damage over 2 cm at the joint of the second volume, but a good sound copy. Ex-libris of Milis of Enniskillen, withcrowned arms incorporating dragons, a bull, and the arms of Ireland. Whereas the first voyage is largely one of scientific discovery, resulting in the charting of hundreds of miles of coastline, the second, whilst also notable for its discoveries contains a large amount of detail concerning the eskimo people, their customs, habitat, hunting, fishing, weapons,etc. with many illustrative plates. Appendices include lunar observations, determination of latitude and longitude, observations on the dip of the horizon at sea, health and disease on board etc. Sabin 58860 and 58864.
