HALL, Samuel Carter.
The Baronial Halls, and ancient picturesque edifices of England.
From Drawings by J.D. Harding, C. Cattermole, S. Prout, W. Müller, J. Holland and other eminent artists. Executed in coloured lithotints by Day and Son and Hanhart, embellished with numerous engravings on wood. London: Willis and Sotheran, 1858. 2 volumes in-folio; Without pagination, approximately 145 pages per volume; Complete with 71 coloured lithotints, nearly all with protective tissue sheets, numerous illustrations in the text and pictorial letters. Contemporary full deer-coloured morocco binding, gilt ornamental borders on both boards, richly gilt spines with raised bands, incorporating crowns and baronial devices, gilt edges and roll-tooled gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Elaborate unidentified ex-libris plates. Corners slightly rubbed, sporadic foxing, as always in this work, but generally a fine copy in a luxurious binding. An imposing (and very heavy!) work from the English critic and journalist Samuel Carter Hall, who established the "Art Journal". Among the most attractive plates which include people in period costumes, saddled horses, working horses or livestock, are Warwick Castle, Fountains Hall, Castle Ashby, Haddon Hall, Penshurst, Sherborne Lodge and Berkeley Castle.
