ROSSETTI, Dante Gabriel.
The Collected Works.
Edited with preface and notes by William M. Rossetti. London: Ellis and Elvey, 1890. Partly original (several poems are printed here for the first time), 2 volumes 8vo; Volume I: xlii, 528p. Volume II: xl, 521p. Nice gilt decorated publisher’s black cloth, blue floral endpapers. Top edges a little dirty and minimal fading to lower edges of upper boards, but a very good crisp copy. Published by his brother William, to whom he was very close, these collected works of Dante Gabriel Rossetti comprise poems, tales and literary papers in the first volume, and translations, notices of fine art in the second volume. From a family of artists (his sister Christina was also a well-known writer), Dante Gabriel was initially a member of the preraphaelite movement, and produced magnificent paintings such as “Beata Beatrix”, “The Holy Grail” or “The Day Dream”. His poetical work was originally buried with his wife when she died suddently in 1862, but in 1869 he had second thoughts and retrieved his manuscripts, which were published in 1870. He died in 1882.
