Publisher’s works dated 1st November 1857; folding frontispice view of the Victoria falls, portrait of Livingstone, 24 plates, 19 text illustrations, 1 folding section, 2 folding maps (one in a pocket at the end of the volume). Publisher’s blind stamped cloth binding with gilt title on spine. Spine and upper board a little stained, small restoration at tail of spine, hinges neatly reinforced, but a very good and clean copy with no foxing. Bookseller’s ticket and printed ex-libris of N. Tourgueneff on endpaper, and manuscript owner’s name with the mention “Vert Bois 1858” (obliterated with an ink pen, but legible) on a preliminary blank. This is probably Nicholas Tourgueneff (1789-1871), author of “Les Russes et la Russie”. The more famous novelist Ivan Tourgueniev first discovered Bougival where he was to build his famous datcha, in 1861 when staying at “Vert Bois… chez un autre Tourgueniev, exilé politique” [Terre d’écrivains]. First edition of Livingstone’s “Missionary Travels”, although probably not the first issue. A pioneer Scottish medical missionary and explorer, David Livingstone (1813-1873), spent most of his life in Africa. His determination to reach the native peoples in central and southern Africa, to introduce them to christianity and free them from slavery, inspired his explorations. First European to encounter many native tribes, he was also the first to cross the width of southern Africa. He discovered and named the Victoria Falls.
