The author was resident in Japan from October, 1938 to July, 1942. He divides this book into two parts - the first discusses his life in Japan between October 1938 and December 1941 and the second his life after Pearl Harbour. This second part includes chapters on Japanese police methods, criminal procedure, rationing, air raid precautions, austerity measures and his Japanese friends.
