Dixon, William Gray.
The Land of the Morning. An Account of Japan and Its People Based on Four Years' Residence in that Country Including Travels into the Remotest Parts of the Interior.
Gemmell. Edinburgh. 1882. Double page map, 21 black and white illustrations, xvii + 689pp, some occasional light foxing a little heavier on first and last leaves, signature on half title, recased with original backstrip laid down on new cloth spine. Pictorial boards gilt showing a little wear at extremities and a little dull but generally a good copy. The author explains in his preface that he had no intention of writing a book about Japan when he left the country but on return to home to Britain he found that misconceptions were prevalent. "Even in the most highly educated circles the most extra-ordinarily erroneous notions seem to be current about the island empire of the Pacific. Nor is it only popular impression that are at fault. Many, if not most, of the text-books about Japan which can only make those who know anything about that country stare with astonishment;" He goes on to state that the gazetteer 'A Guide Round the World', states that the correct name of Osaka is Kioto, and that is the current capital of Japan which is typical of the mistakes made. "The result was, that I set myself to record what seemed to me the most noteworthy of my experiences in Japan, supplementing these with the most recent reliable information I could obtain on all the more important aspects of the country."
