Chikamatsu Monzaemon (1653 - 1725) wrote about 130 plays which were extremely popular during his lifetime and many of his plays are still performed in Japan today. Donald Keene has translated 11 of Chikamatsu's plays in this volume as a representative selection for Western readers.
