Both volumes bright pictorial cloth gilt, spines little darkened, t.e.g., neat names front free endpapers, tail of spine vol I worn with little loss, vol II few leaves carelessly opened still a very attractive set. Traces European contact with Japan history through to 1860. The second volume also includes descriptions of some aspects of life in Japan during the mid 19th century.
