Folding maps, black and white photographic plates, frontispiece, xv + 410pp, appendices including glossary of Arabic words and names and geographical glossary, bibliography, and notes, index, photographic plates evenly browned along margins, title page foxed, head and tail of spine lightly rubbed, some foxing endpapers and edges and occasionally in text, hinges split, some minor insect damage edges, text is generally sound and clean. Travel through the desert over the ages, covering ancient and medieval trade, merchant, private and hajj caravans, postal service, and mechanical transport. Extensive reading of the writings of the desert travellers together with four years work in the field went into writing this book. During her field work Dr Grant discussed problems personally with eminent explorers and surveyors of the desert, with Ministers of the Egyptian government, and with such authorities as Hajii Selim Sawwaf of Damascus, T.E. Lawrence and the initiator of the motor transport system.
