The Water Gypsies

London Methuen and Co, 1930 First Edition 8vo Finely bound by the Bayntun-Riviere bindery in half light green morocco, marbled paper sides, spine with five raised bands, decorative centres, lettered and dated in gilt, hand marbled endleaves, top edge gilt. A. P. Herbert's popular romantic novel is largely set on the Thames and the Grand Union Canal in the 1920's and follows the fortunes of the 'water gypsies' who live on board the traditional, gaily painted horse-drawn narrow boats. It was made into a film in 1932, starring Ann Todd and Herbert later adapted the story for a successful musical comedy.
