Monsarrat, Nicholas

The Story Of Esther Costello

London Cassell 1953 First Edition 8vo Finely bound by the Bayntun-Riviere bindery in half blue morocco, blue cloth sides, spine with five raised bands, decorative centres, lettered and dated in gilt, hand marbled endleaves, top edge gilt. In Nicholas Monsarrat's unusual novel, Esther Costello is a young Irish girl left deaf, dumb and blind after a tragic accident. She is discovered living in appalling conditions by a wealthy American, who takes her back to the States, hoping to provide her with proper medical care. Her new patron sets up a charitable foundation, launching a nationwide fund-raising campaign to help Esther, only to have her good intentions thwarted by unscrupulous promoters and a greedy ex-husband. A 1957 film version starred Joan Crawford in one of her best roles.
