Monsarrat, Nicholas
The Ship That Died Of Shame; And Other Stories
London Cassell 1959 First Edition 8vo Finely bound by the Bayntun-Riviere bindery in half blue morocco, marbled paper sides, spine with five raised bands, lettered and dated in gilt, hand marbled endleaves, top edge gilt. The title story in this collection highlights the problems faced by servicemen returning to civilian life. A fantasy about a ship which revolts against the criminal practices of its crew, the tale originated in a chance post-war encounter between Nicholas Monsarrat and a man who had served on the same corvette in 1941. The latter offered him a job smuggling brandy and watches from France in a converted gunboat. In the postscript Monsarrat writes "I decided to become a civil servant instead...My friend subsequently went to jail." Richard Attenborough starred in Ealing Studio's 1955 film version.
