Mortimer, Penelope
The Pumpkin Eater
London Hutchinson 1962 First Edition 8vo 8vo. Finely bound by the Bayntun-Riviere bindery in half light green morocco, green cloth sides, spine with five raised bands, decorative centres, lettered and dated in gilt, hand marbled endleaves, top edge gilt. One of Penelope Mortimer's best novels, The Pumpkin Eater was based largely on her marriage to "Rumpole" author, John Mortimer, a relationship the latter described as "bloodstained but never boring". Like the central character, Jo, the novelist suffered a mental breakdown, when at the age of forty two, in hospital following an abortion and sterilisation, she discovered her husband was having an affair. Anne Bancroft won her second Oscar nomination for her marvellous performance as Jo in the 1964 film version, adapted by Harold Pinter.
