Norton, Mary

Bedknob And Broomstick

London J. M. Dent & Sons 1957 First Edition 8vo Illlustrated by Erik Blegvad colour title page and black and white drawings in the text. Finely bound by the Bayntun-Riviere bindery in full blue morocco, spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt, hand marbled endleaves, all edges gilt. Mary Norton's children's classic was originally published in two volumes; "The Magic Bedknob" (1943) and "Bonfires & Broomsticks" (1947). This is the first one volume edition and contains all the adventures of the three Wilson children. Whilst spending the summer in the country, they discover that their neighbour Miss Eglantine Price is a witch. In exchange for their silence, she gives them a magic bedknob which lets them travel through space and time on their aunt's old brass bed. The 1971 Disney musical, starring Angela Lansbury, is loosely based on Norton's stories.
