The Natural History Of Selborne

Thorton Butterworth London 1929 Edited with an introduction and notes by E.M. Nicholson. Tissue-guarded portrait frontispiece. Illustrated by Eric Fitch Daglish. Sixteen mounted wood-engravings with captioned tissue guards. Two portraits of White from original paintings and a fold-out map of the Selborne area. Limited edition of 125 copies, of which this is no. 31. 4to. Finely bound by the Bayntun-Riviere bindery in full green morocco, two line gilt panel enclosing a decorative border of songbirds and foliage, spine lettered and dated in gilt with one line panels, tooled bands, emblematic centres, hand marbled endleaves, top edge gilt, others uncut. Daglish learnt wood-engraving from Paul Nash at the Royal College of Art and was one of the leading figures in the 1920's revival of the craft. He was also a talented naturalist, which can be seen in his superb illustrations for this edition of "Selborne". A Daily News reviewer from 1928 wrote that he "has quickly established himself as the Bewick of our times, with his exquisite woodcuts of birds, fishes and wildlife."
