Hadfield, John (ed.)
Restoration Love Songs
Preston The Cupid Press 1950 First Edition Illustrated by Rex Whistler with folding colour frontispiece, six plates and decorations in the text. Limited edition of 650 copies of which this is number 516. 8vo. Finely bound by the Bayntun-Riviere bindery in full blue morocco, decorative gilt block on upper and lower cover, spine lettered in gilt with floral centres, top edge gilt, others uncut. A companion volume to "Georgian Love Songs", this anthology gathers together lyrics from the period 1660 to 1714. Among the poets represented are Dryden, the Earl of Rochester, Congreve and several more obscure writers. Describing his editorial aims, Hadfield writes "If I have brought one or two minor poets and anonymous lyrics out of the shadows, and given a more general view of a literary landscape in which four or five notable figures have hitherto been the conspicuous features, I am content." Poets such as Richard Leigh and Philip Ayres are "restored in this collection to a position worthier of their merits." "Matthew Coppinger and Thomas Heyrick are two other thoughtful writers in the minor key who had their own peculiar talent and charm, and deserve some reconsideration."
