Stephens, James

Irish Fairy Tales

London Macmillan & Co 1920 First Edition Thus Illustrated by Arthur Rackham with sixteen colour plates and twenty one black and white drawings. Large 8vo. Finely bound by the Bayntun-Riviere bindery in full light green morocco, one line gilt panel on upper and lower cover enclosing a design of three gilt shamrocks in each corner, spine lettered and dated in gilt with one line panels, shamrock centres, corner tools and tooled bands, hand marbled endleaves, all edges gilt. Twelve Irish legends, including The Story of Tuan Mac Cairill, Oisin's Mother and The Enchanted Cave of Cesh Corran, are retold by the poet and novelist James Stephens. A scholar of Gaelic language and folklore, Stephens's imaginative renditions of the tales are full of the magic, humour and whimsy that characterises the Irish story-telling tradition. Arthur Rackham was an ideal choice to illustrate the collection. Stephens told him that it was "great pleasure and a great privilege" to work with him and the two men subsequently became very good friends.
