First Edition. Small 4to. [210 x 162 x 39 mm]. [8]ff, 415, [13] pp. Bound in contemporary sprinkled calf, the spine divided into five panels with gilt compartments, lettered in the second panel on a red goatskin label, the others tooled with semi-circular and scroll ornaments, the edges of the boards tooled with a gilt roll, plain endleaves, red sprinkled edges. (Joints cracked but firm, headcaps broken, corners worn). Wing T.704. With the Imprimatur leaf. Occasional very minor soling, but a good copy. Thomas Tenison (1636-1715) was Chaplain in Ordinary to the King, and was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury in 1694. The discourse is directed chiefly against the Church of Rome, and in the dedication to the Earl of Manchester he states that "some part of it was meditated and the whole revised at your Castle of Kimbolton". This is a presentation copy, inscribed at the head of the title-page: "E Libris H. Holt. Donum Authoris". Henry Holt has signed his name at the foot of the title and on p.1, and has added some extra errata and a few notes and markings in manuscript. The title also has the signature of "Ed. Randolph".
