Puckle, James
The Club; In a Dialogue between Father and Son
London By J. Johnson 1817 First edition Engraved frontispiece portrait, engraved title with vignette, initials and woodcut head and tailpiece vignettes after John Thurston. Printed in red and black. 8vo, [2]ff, x, [8], 96 pp. Bound in contemporary straight-grained green goatskin, the covers with a wide border composed of gilt fillets and three blind rolls. The spine divided into six panels, lettered in the second and at the foot, the others with gilt compartments and a blind floral tool, brown endleaves, gilt edges. (Rubbed and refurbished). The preliminary leaves are foxed and there is occasional spotting thereafter. The binding is very attractive, though it was somewhat rubbed and has been refurbished. First published in 1711, this 1817 edition was issued in various limited impressions, of which this is one of 500 ordinary, or small, paper copies out of a total edition of 735. It is a distinguished piece of printing, with charming woodcut illustrations.
