London Printed in 1725, Reprinted in 1772 Woodcut insignia on the title. 4to. [249 x 187 x 13 mm]. [1]f, viii, 69 pp. Bound in contemporary red goatskin, the covers with a wide gilt border composed of repeated impressions of a floral and scroll tool with a pair of serpents' heads at the base, a large and a small floral tool, small stars and roundels. The spine divided into six panels, with gilt tooled bands and panels containing a variety of small tools, the edges of the boards and turn-ins hatched in gilt, marbled endleaves, gilt edges. (Lacking ties, the leather a little darkened in places). Occasional minor soiling, but a good copy in an attractive binding. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath was established as a military order by Letters Patent of George I in 1725. Its origins were mediaeval and the title arose from the ritual of washing before knights attended the mass at which they were to receive their accolade. The Order was enlarged in 1815, and now includes civilian members. Bookplate of Charles Edouard Wessex.
