[Whittingham and Arliss]

The Forty Thieves

London [by Whittingham and Rowland] for Whittingham and Arliss, Juvenile Library 1816 Adorned with Cuts. Woodcut frontispiece (printed on the verso of the front cover) and 11 woodcuts. [65 x 61 mm]. 94pp. Original printed wrappers (backstrip renewed, soiled). NSTC records only one copy, at Harvard, and this edition is not recorded in BLPC. This is one of 13 "Miniature" books published by Whittingham and Arliss and advertised on the rear cover at the price of 6d each. The full-page woodcuts are printed within the text. There is a small hole at the foot of the woodcut on p.63, a short strip is missing at the foot of p.75-6 (without any loss of text and probably dating from the time of printing) and there is some light browning and minor staining.
