Tägliche Andachtsübungen, zum Gebrauche Ihrer Kaiserlichen Majestät der Königin zu Hungarn und Böheim

Franz Leopold Grund, bürgerl. Buchbinder, [c.1770] Wien Engraved frontispiece, title and 10 plates.8vo. [179 x 115 x 20 mm]. 284, [4] pp. Contemporary Viennese binding by Grund of brown calf with a dark green central panel and pink surrounds decorated in gilt with various rococo tools including floral and foliate sprays, a vase and a chequered ornament. Smooth spine divided into six gilt panels, the second and sixth covered with a pink onlay and the fourth with a green onlay, each panel tooled with a smaller vase, decorated paper endleaves, gilt edges. Contained within the original pull-off case of brown calf decorated in a similar fashion with pink and light green onlays and gilt rococo tooling, the spine tooled with repeated pallets, lined with patterned paper. (A little rubbed, remains of a ribbon in the case). A book of devotion dedicated to Maria Theresa, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia from 1740 until her death in 1780. It was printed and published in Vienna by Franz Leopold Grund, and was also bound in his workshop near St. Stephan's Cathedral. It is an exuberant example of the rococo style and has survived in fine condition. Franz Leopold died in 1783 and was succeeded by his son, Ignaz, who died in 1805, and the firm carried on until 1918. A later and rather less elaborate example of a Grund binding was offered as item 158 in Martin Breslauer Catalogue 110. The firm is also referred to in Mayer, "Wiens Buchdruckergeschichte" II, p.124. Booklabel of Lucy Spiegl.
