Rawdon-Hastings, (Francis, first Marquess of Hastings and...

Summary of the Administration of the Indian Government, from October 1813, to January 1823

London William Earle, Berkeley Square. Reprinted at Malta 1824 Engraved folding frontispiece map ofHindoostan with the imprint of G. Bonnell, Malta. 8vo. [2]ff, 130pp. Uncut and largely unopened in the original marbled paper wrappers, with a printed label on the spine. (A few small chips to the spine). A fine copy. In 1824 Hastings took on the governorship of Malta, having resigned as Governor-General of India in 1822 following differences with the East India Company over his order allowing the powerful banking house William Palmer & Co. to lend money to the Nizam of Hyderabad, despite an act of Parliament prohibiting loans to native princes. This defence of his years in office was addressed to the Court of Directors of the East India Company. On his departure from London he left a transcript in the hands of some of his friends who arranged for its printing, while he supervised this edition on his arrival in Malta.
