London for William Miller 1810 First Edition Engraved title-page vignettes, signed by F. Engleheartin vol.3. 3 volumes. 4to. [242 x 152 x 145 mm]. [iii], vi-xi, [i], 595 pp; [1]f, 614pp; [1]f, 598pp. Bound in contemporary vellum, the covers with a wide border composed of a gilt fillet, thick and thin blue wash lines, two black rolls and a black cornerpiece, with a small black arms block at the centre. The spines divided into five unequal panels with bands tooled with a gilt pallet on a blue wash and flanked with a gilt fillet, lettered in black in the second panel, numbered in black in the fourth, and with the place and date in gilt on a blue wash at the foot, the head of the spine tooled with a gilt pallet on a blue wash, the first and fifth panels tooled in black to form a large ornament and the third panel tooled in black to a different design, drab endleaves, marbled edges. (The edges of the boards exposed in places, a few minor stains, vol.3 dulled and the blue wash on the spine faded). Based on Dodsley's Old Plays, Sir Walter Scott is said to have been the editor. A good clean copy. The bindings may have seen better days, but are still rather splendid. Bookplate of John Quantock, whose arms are different from those on the bindings.
