Le Clerc, (Sébastien)

Figures De La Passion D. N. S. Jesus Christ

[Augsburg] Johann Ullrich Krauss, c.1695 Engraved title by Johann Ullrich Krauss after Sébastien LeClerc and 37 plates, mounted within engraved decorative borders on thick paper. Oblong 8vo. [154 x 198 x 26 mm]. Bound in contemporary mottled calf, the covers tooled in gilt with a rococo roll border and a centrepiece composed of two large floral ornaments, one incorporating a crown. The spine divided into five panels with gilt compartments, lettered in the second panel on a red goatskin label, the others tooled with a sprig and acorns, the edges of the boards hatched in gilt, marbled endleaves, gilt edges. (Slightly rubbed and the boards a little bowed). A few trivial spots but a fine copy in a very attractive binding. This is a complete series of the Passion of Christ by Sébastien Le Clerc (1637-1714), a pupil of Callot, whose influence can be clearly seen in these compositions. They were first published in Paris in 1692 in two editions, one without text and the other with engraved text in the plates and an additional title and dedication. A few years later Krauss (1645-1719) re-engraved the plates, adding a new title and mounted them within specially engraved frames which had been printed on thick paper. In 1705 Krauss published another edition of the Passion after Le Clerc, with 20 plates, each with two scenes and the text in German.
