Engraved frontispiece and woodcut device on the title. 8vo. [173 x 97 x 39 mm]. 367, [1] pp. Contemporary binding of shagreen, the covers with a gilt metal frame around the edges of the boards and gilt filigree catches and convex clasps each incorporating pieces of cut glass, studs and a miniature painting under glass. The spine divided into six panels, gilt embossed paper pastedowns, gilt edges gauffered with two lines of dots alongside the headbands and at the corners of the text block. (Five of the small pieces of cut glass replaced and a few others slightly damaged). Bound with: "Die Kleine Bibel: oder der Psalter Davids". 95, [1] pp. Zurich: Gessner, 1776. "Die CL Psalmen Davids". Engraved frontispiece and musical notation. 400pp. Gessner, 1776. "Auserlesene Alte Psalmen Davids". Musical notation. 64pp. Gessner, 1776. Occasional light spotting or browning but a very good copy. The free endleaves are missing, possibly because they were damaged by the clips used to attach the catch plates to the boards. This is a remarkable binding, covered in shagreen and with two pairs of catches and two clasps each finely worked in filigree and set with pieces of glass, studs and a hand-painted portrait miniature. The two larger portraits, on the clasps, are of a gentleman and a lady and those on the catches are of two boys and two girls - presumably the family who first owned the book. One of the daughters has grown a little disfigured over the years and it is a shame that they never left us their names, but this is an unusual, if not unique way of personalizing a binding.
