[195 x 118 x 73 mm]. viii, [ii], 352 pp; iv, 292 pp; [vi], 312 pp. Bound c.1900 by Riviere (signed on the front endleaves) in half blue goatskin, marbled paper sides, the spines divided into six panels with gilt compartments, lettered in the second and third and dated at the foot, the other panels with centre and corner tools, marbled endleaves, top edges gilt. Ainsworth's most celebrated "Newgate" novel. A one page autograph letter signed by Ainsworth has been bound in opposite the frontispiece in vol.1. He apologises for a delay in responding to a note, suggests a meeting and sends regards to a Mrs Lane. The half-title in vol.3 (the only one called for) is not present. A very good copy in a handsome binding by Riviere. Circular leather bookplate of Alexander Lawson Duncan of Jordanstone House, Perthshire.
