London [by T. Rickaby] for Edwards 1790 First edition 8vo. [190 x 118 x 27 mm]. [1]f, v, [iii], 323pp. Bound in contemporary tree calf, the covers with a gilt border composed of a fillet, dog-tooth and "Greek key" roll. The spine divided into six panels with gilt compartments, lettered in the second panel on a red goatskin label, the others tooled with a lyre and sprigs, the edges of the boards hatched in gilt, the turn-ins tooled with a gilt roll, marbled endleaves, yellow edges. (Headcaps and corners worn, joints and spine rubbed). Occasional spotting or foxing and some minor soiling or staining. Though the volume has seen better days it is still quite handsome. The binding is in the style of Edwards of Halifax. An anthology of shorter poems of the 16th and 17th centuries which was recognised on publication as "the most judicious selection that had yet been made". The typography is of some merit with a number of poems printed in the form of diamonds. Label of "W. Anderson. Bookseller. 186 Piccadilly". Ink signature of Tho. Hamilton and M.C.R. Currer.
