Sixth Edition. 8vo. 300pp. [178 x 106 x 24 mm]. Bound by John Bird of London (with his ticket and the date "Jany 1825" stamped in ink inside the front cover) in tree calf, the front cover with the blind block of the Society For Promoting Christian Knowledge. Smooth spine divided into six panels by double gilt fillets, lettered in the second on a red goatskin label, the corners of the edges of the baords hatched in gilt, plain endleaves, lightly sprinkled edges. (Headcaps chipped, joints and corners a little rubbbed and small patch of insect activity on the lower cover). Some spotting and occasional light soiling. At the foot of the title the price is given as "4s. 6d. bound". This copy has been bound by John Bird for the Society For Promoting Christian Knowledge". His ticket specifies that he is a bookbinder and gives his address as 52 Hatton Garden, London. Below it is the date "Jany 1825" stamped in ink. Ramsden, "London Bookbinders 1780-1840", p.39, refers to him as John Bird III and notes another binding for the S.P.C.K. with a stamped date of 1818 and his "nice" oval ticket seen on a binding at Foyle's. Ink inscription inside front cover "Mary Ann Buckingham her book Feb 1st 1841 The gift of her uncle Joseph Buckingham".
