Bouchard et Gravier Rome 1781 First Edition Découvertes et dessinées en différens tems, gravées en trente trois Planches dans le goût du Dessein réhaussé, avec Leur Description Historique. Hand-coloured engraved vignette on the title and 33 plates by J. Jourdan printed in black, blue and brown and coloured by hand and heightened with white. Folio. [423 x 276 x 20 mm]. [2]ff, 14, [1] pp. Bound in contemporary quarter calf, pink paper sides and vellum corners, smooth spine divided into seven panels by a gilt pallet, lettered in the second panel on a darkened background, the other panels tooled with a gilt flower, plain endleaves and edges. (Rubbed, with some wear to the edges of the boards, a few scrapes on the lower cover and the pink faded to brown in patches). Brunet II, 148. Cicognara 3678. Neither refer to the plates being coloured. The paper has some very light blotches, almost certainly as a consequence of the way in which it was originally sized, and there is a small damp stain on plate 27, touching the foot of the image. Most of the plates are signed by J. Jourdan and they are numbered by hand and protected by the original paper guards (which are pasted to the opposite pages). It is a very good copy. The work is rare, with only four locations recorded on OCLC - the New York Public Library, the University of Vermont, the Bibliotheque D'Art et D'Archeologie and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The Fermor-Hesketh copy from the library at Easton Neston was sold at Sotheby's, 15/12/1999, as lot 365 (and was subsequently item 65 in Marlborough Rare Books catalogue 181). Jourdan appears to be an otherwise unrecorded artist or engraver, while Bouchard and Gravier are better known as the publishers of Piranesi's "Le Antichità Romane", Rome 1756.
