[196 x 124 x 9 mm]. xii, 63, [1] pp. Bound in the original marbled boards, later buff paper spine retaining the original printed label, plain endleaves, uncut edges. (Corners a little worn, chip to head of the spine). A few light spots but a very good copy. The first edition of one of Dibdin's own classics and the work which made his name. It was said to have sold out in six weeks and it brought him to the notice of George John, second Earl Spencer, who became his patron for life. It was reprinted three times, in 1804, 1808 and 1827, each time being greatly enlarged and corrected. Early ink notes on a rear endleaf.
