Camden, William

Rerum Anglicarum Et Hibernicarum Annales

typis Elseviriorum Lugd. Batavorum [i.e. Leiden] 1639 Regnante Elisabetha. Auctore Guilielmo Camdeno. Ultima Editio. Title printed in black and red and with a woodcut device. Engraved portrait of Queen Elizabeth. 8vo. [184 x 110 x 57 mm]. [7]ff, xvi, 856, [38] pp. Bound in contemporary calf, the covers with a blind double fillet border, the spine divided into five panels with raised bands, the edges of the boards tooled with a gilt fillet, rough turn-ins and exposed paste-board, red edges. (Joints almost invisibly repaired). Willems 475 ("Cette édition est la reproduction de celle de 1625 (no.227); mais elle est beaucoup plus belle et imprimée sur meilleur papier"). Small hole in the blank margin of Bb1. A very good copy, from the library of Andrew Fletcher (1655-1716) of Saltoun, with his signature at the head of the title. Fletcher was a passionate republican and Scottish patriot, described in DNB as "one of the most accomplished Scotchmen of his time". He travelled extensively in Europe, advised Monmouth in 1685, and returned to Scotland after the revolution of 1688. He was violently opposed to the union with England, and in 1708 was briefly imprisoned for supposed complicity in an attempted French invasion. He published a series of pamphlets and speeches, including an Account of a Conversation (1703), in which he declared that a nation's ballads were more influential than its laws. With the more recent signature of Martin Wight.
