Ferrand, Antoine

L'Esprit De L'Histoire

le Veuve Nyon, An XII Paris 1804 Ou Lettres Politiques Et Morales D'Un Père A Son Fils, Sur la manière d'étudier l'Histoire en général, et particulièrement l'Histoire de France. Troisième Edition. Four volumes. 8vo. [200 x 127 x 115 mm]. xxiv, 470 pp; [2]ff, 492pp; [2]ff, 520pp; [2]ff, 501, [3] pp. Bound in contemporary tree calf, smooth spines with the title lettered on a red goatskin label, the volume numbers on a black label and the author on a green label, the corners of the edges of the boards hatched in gilt, plain endleaves, blue sprinkled edges. Some spotting and light foxing but a very good copy in a most attractive binding. There are some pencil notes in the margins, written in English presumably by William Danby of Swinton Park, Yorkshire, whose bookplate and signature appear on the front pastedown in each volume. The notes have been trimmed, suggesting that Danby had the books bound himself, probably at York (another book from his library, Ferguson's History, has his note "Bought at Basil, 1789, bound at York, 1796"). Danby had some fine books.
