[231 x170 x 40 mm]. x, [ii], 366 pp. Contemporary binding of brown goatskin over bevelled boards, the covers with a border composed of blind thick and thin fillets and roundels and gilt fleurons, enclosing a large panel of green goatskin, with a cut-out brown oval-shaped centrepiece lettered in gilt and surrounded by gilt tooling. The spine divided into six panels with blind tooled bands, lettered in the second panel on a green goatskin label, the other panels tooled with gilt centres and blind roundels, the turn-ins tooled with gilt rolls, marbled endleaves, gilt edges. (Slightly rubbed). Occasional light foxing, and the frontispiece and title a little pitted. The binding is quite a piece of work. First published in 1838, Tupper's Proverbial Philosophy was one of the great Victorian bestsellers, and favourite reading of the Queen herself, passing through some 60 editions in 50 years. Blindstamp of "Stacy, Booksellers, Norwich" on the front fly-leaf, alongside an ink inscription from a father to his daughter, dated 1860.
