Satyres et Autres Oeuvres
chez Jacob Tonson A Londres 1733 de Regnier, Accompagnees de Remarques Historiques. Nouvelle Edition considerablement augmentée. Engraved frontispiece by L. Cars after C. Natoire, title printed in red and black with an engraved vignette by Cochin, 21 large engraved vignette head and tail pieces by Cochin after Boucher and Natoire, engraved initials and woodcut ornaments, the text set within a typographic woodcut border printed in red. 4to. [293 x 225 x 47 mm]. xx, 420 pp. Bound c.1770 by Langlois of Lyon (signed in gilt at the foot of the spine) in mottled calf, the covers with a gilt triple fillet border. The spine divided into six panels with gilt compartments, lettered in the second on an olive goatskin label, the others tooled with a large flower, sprigs, dots, stars and small fleur-de-lis, the edges of the boards tooled with a gilt double fillet, the turn-ins tooled with a gilt roll, marbled endleaves, the edges gilt over marble. (A little rubbed, tiny hole in lower joint). Some browning and spotting, as is usual with this edition. The imprint is false, and the book may have been printed in Amsterdam. It is a handsome production, enlivened by the fine engravings and the red borders around each page. The binding is signed in gilt at the foot of the spine "Rel. par Langlois a Lyon", and is illustrated and described in Seymour de Ricci, French Signed Bindings in the Schiff Collection, vol.2, no.111. A seven volume set of Piron, Oeuvres Complètes, 1776, bound by Langlois and signed in a similar fashion was in the Wittock collection, and sold at Christie's Paris, 8/11/2004, lot 188. With the leather label of Mortimer L. Schiff, sold Sotheby's 7/7/1938, lot 1165, £2 10s to Lady Hilda Ingram, with her leather label.
