(Expert repairs to the foot of the joints, slightly rubbed). Wing B3347. A fine copy of the first edition of a valuable survey of critical opinion current at the end of the seventeenth century. The first part contains a series of short essays on style, the varieties of poetry, rhyme, translation and the like. The second and longest part contains "characters and censures" of sixty-odd poets from Aeschylus to poets of Blount's own day, incuding such English writers as Beaumont and Fletcher, Spenser, Jonson, Shakespeare, Milton, Cowley, Davenant, Denham, Waller, Katherine Philips and Rochester. With the bookplate of Lord Rolle, from the library at Bicton House, Devon.
