Johnson, Samuel
Irene: A Tragedy
for R. Dodsley London 1749 First Edition As it is Acted at the Theatre Royal in Drury-Lane. 8vo. [207 x 124 x 16 mm]. [4]ff, 86, [2] pp. Bound in contemporary sprinkled calf, neatly rebacked, the new spine lettered on a citron label and tooled in gilt. (Edges of the boards a little rubbed). With the half-title and final leaf of advertisements (which are often found missing). There is a little light soiling, mostly at the beginning and end, but it is a good copy. Johnson's only play, a tragedy over which he laboured for many years and which finally reached the stage through the influence of his friend and pupil David Garrick. The work was a failure on its first production, and earned little praise or money for the ambitious young author. Bookplates of J.C. Mansel-Pleydell and Arthur G. Rippey of Denver.
