Goodwin, Rev. Harvey
Parish Sermons
[by Metcalfe and Palmer for] Deightons Cambridge 1847 First Edition 8vo. [189 x 110 x 25 mm]. viii,303, [1] pp. Contemporary binding of hard-grained blue goatskin, the covers with a gilt border composed of a triple fillet and dotted roll and repeated impressions of three floral tools. The spine divided into six panels with gilt compartments, lettered in the second and at the foot, the others tooled with a flower and vine leaves on a dotted background, the edges of the boards tooled with a gilt roll, the turn-ins and matching inside joints with gilt fillets, a "Greek-key" roll and a crest roll, ivory watered silk endleaves, gilt edges, elaborately gauffered with floral tools. (A little rubbed and refurbished). A very good copy in a handsome binding with elaborately gauffered edges. It must surely be the work of a Cambridge binder. There is an ink inscription on the front fly-leaf: "Ellen Goodwin from Mr. Deighton, Cambridge 1848". Harvey Goodwin (1818-1891) became a fellow of Caius College, Cambridge in 1841 and was ordained as a priest in 1844. In 1845 he married Ellen King, and they had seven children, all born in Cambridge. He was appointed Dean of Ely in 1858 and was Bishop of Carlisle from 1869 until his death. His books included A Guide to the Parish Church, in which he advised that to avoid wandering eyes and thoughts the worshipper should keep his eye on his Prayer Book and never mind the colour of Mrs A's bonnet.
