[Massey, Lucy Fletcher - compiler]
Christian Lyrics: Chiefly Selected from Modern Authors
[by William Clowes and Sons for] Sampson, Low, Son, and Marston London 1868 Woodcut frontispiece and woodcut vignettes and decorations throughout the text. Small 4to. [222 x 155 x 22 mm]. 180pp. Bound in contemporary brown polished calf, the covers with a blind triple fillet border and panel, with a gilt fleur-de-lis in the corners and blind stars in the compartments. The spine divided into six panels with blind fillets, lettered in the second panel on a black label, the others with a gilt fleur-de-lis, the turn-ins tooled with gilt rolls, plain endleaves at the front with a painted miniature inset inside the front boards, marbled endleaves at the rear, gilt edges. A little foxing but a very good copy. Of particular note is the miniature painting inside the front cover. It depicts a knight holding a banner with a gift inscription "FCF / from / WF / May 2, 1868" and it is signed by Hugh Rowley. It is exquisitely rendered, in many colours, with a good deal of silver. The Hon. Hugh Rowley (1833-1908) was an illustrator and author of Puniana and More Puniana, Gamosagammon, Sage Stuffing for Green Goslings and Advice to Parties About to Marry.
