[Combe, William?]

The Life of Napoleon

[by Plummer and Brewis] for T. Tegg, Wm. Allason, and J. Dick London 1817 First Edition A Hudibrastic Poem in Fifteen Cantos, by Doctor Syntax, embellished with Thirty Engravings, by G. Cruikshank. Engraved title and 29 plates by Cruikshank all with contemporary hand-colouring. 8vo. [241 x 150 x 29 mm]. 260pp. Bound c.1900 by Zaehnsdorf (signed in gilt on the front turn-in) in red goatskin, the covers with a gilt single and double fillet border. The spine divided into six panels with gilt compartments, lettered in the second and third and dated at the foot, the others with an N within a wreath and leafy sprigs, the edges of the boards tooled with a gilt double fillet, the turn-ins with gilt rolls, marbled endleaves, top edge gilt, the others untrimmed. Tear repaired pp.135-6. A very good copy in a handsome binding by Zaehnsdorf. Combe's authorship is now in doubt, but Cruikshank's engravings remain enduring images of Napoleon at his worst.
