Paterculus, Caius Velleius

The Roman History

Edinburgh For the Author, by John Mosman 1722 ... Translated by J[ames]. P[aterson]. one of the Masters of the High-School in Edinburgh. In which the Escapes of a late Version, done by one Mr. Newcomb, are taken notice of, in Remarks at the Foot of every Page. First Edition of this translation. 8vo. [3]ff, ix, [i], 258 pp. Contemporary Scottish binding of red goatskin, the spine divided into six panels, lettered in one, the others gilt tooled with scroll corner- and floral centre-pieces, the edges of the boards and turn-ins tooled with a thistle and flower roll, comb-marbled endleaves, gilt edges. (Joints and corners slightly rubbed). The ESTC collation appears to be wrong, as it states 4 unnumbered preliminary leaves, which it then notes as missing in 5 of the 7 recorded copies. Our copy collates identically with the McMaster University copy, which is not noted as being incomplete. The book is printed on thick paper. A very good copy, in a contemporary Scottish binding, with a characteristic thistle and flower roll. Paterculus's "Historia Romana" was first translated into English by Sir Robert Le Grys and published in London in 1632. Thomas Newcomb's translation was published in 1721. Signature of Pat Cokburne written vertically on the title and front-flyleaf. Bookplate and signature of Inglis of Cramond, and Calder House shelf-marks. Modern bookplate of Haebelein.
