[4]ff, 123pp. Bound in contemporary red goatskin, the covers tooled in gilt with a roll border of repeated stars and scrolls, and a large lozenge shaped centrepiece built-up from individual tools. The spine divided into six panels, lettered in the second, the others tooled in gilt, comb-marbled endleaves, gilt edges. (Joints cracked but firm). Goldsmiths' 6485. Smart's "Tables of Simple Interest and Discount" was first published in 1707. Charles Brand's revised edition of 1780 refers to the Tables "first published in the year 1724", but as no such edition appears in ESTC he may have meant 1726. With the half-title (slightly browned) and the specially printed dedication leaf "To Sir William Joliff Knight; and One of the Directors of the Bank of England,...". This copy has an eighteenth century Joliffe bookplate, and is clearly a dedication copy. I had another copy of this book in an almost identical binding as item 72 in my catalogue 1. That contained a general dedication to the Governor, Deputy-Governor and 24 Directors of the Bank of England (including Joliff). The binding is "Harleian" in style, though the finishing is a little crude. The same border roll is found on a copy of "The Lives and Characters of the Offices of the Crown", Edinburgh 1726, bound for George I, and illustrated as item 13 in Maggs Bros. catalogue 407.
