Enfield, William

Exercises In Elocution

Warrington By W. Eyre, for J. Johnson 1780 Selected from Various Authors, and Arranged under ProperHeads: Intended as a Sequel to a Work Entitled The Speaker. First Edition. 8vo. [viii], 424 pp. Bound in contemporary tree calf, the covers with a wide gilt border composed of two rolls, one used twice, and a corner tool. The spine divided into six panels, lettered in the second on a red goatskin label, the others gilt tooled with an anthemion tool at the centres, and a series of gilt rolls at the foot, marbled endleaves, yellow edges. (Slightly rubbed, small patch of insect damage on the lower cover). O'Brien, "Eyres' Press", 41. A little light spotting, and the yellow from the edges has bled on to a few leaves. A good copy, in an attractive binding (and a relatively early example of tree calf). Enfield was lecturer on the "Belle Lettres" and rector of the Academy at Warrington. Though this institution was dissolved in 1783, this work and "The Speaker" both remained popular and were regularly reprinted. The pieces are divided into seven chapters: Narrative Pieces, Didactic Pieces, Argumentative Pieces, Orations and Harangues, Dialogues, Descriptive Pieces and Pathetic Pieces.
