Titles printed in red and black with engraved vignette and six engraved plates by Muller. 2 volumes. Small 8vo. [162 x 98 x 36 mm]. [11]ff, 186pp; [1]f, 187-358, [8] pp. Bound in contemporary red goatskin, the covers with a gilt single fillet border, the spines divided into six panels with gilt double fillet compartments, lettered in the second panel, the others tooled to a floral design, the edges of the boards and turn-ins gilt tooled with a hatched roll, marbled endleaves, blue spot-marbled edges. (Slightly rubbed and scratched and with a short split in the upper joint of vol.2). Occasional light spotting, but a very good copy of this handsome publication. William Sandby's edition of the plays of Terence was printed more or less simultaneously in two formats - the other is a larger octavo of 400pp. Of the eight complete sets of this issue listed in the ESTC (1990) only two have illustrations, though they are regularly present in the larger format. Bookplate of William Edward Kelly, various pencil marks, including "2 vols. 1.4" and acquisition note of William Rees-Mogg dated June 1960 ("?Wm Beckford's copy").
