FORSTER

(Edward Morgan, 1879-1970, Novelist) Autograph Inscription In my mother's room West Hackhurst 1946,

unsigned, inside the front cover of ‘Victoria. An Anecdotal Memoir of Her Majesty ... from Infancyto the Coronation. With a careful and interesting record of that Magnificent Ceremony’, 6th ed., London, T. Noble, with four steel engravings, an engaging and not over fulsome account of the Queen’s early years, including many chance contacts with the public in Kensington Gardens,  above Forster’s inscription is his mother’s early pencilled signature ‘Alice Whichelo’,  and Forster’s own book-label, the volume 140pp. 12mo, red cloth boards gilt, no date, c. 1838, Among many interesting facts is that, on learning of her accession, Victoria’s first act was to write to Queen Adelaide, putting ‘Her Majesty the Queen’ on the envelope, and refusing to change the mode of address (p. 93).  Alice Clara Whichelo,  known as ‘Lily’, married Forster’s architect father in 1877. Her husband died in 1880 when Forster was not two years old. West Hackhurst at Abinger Hammer, Surrey, was left to E.M.F. in 1924 by his Aunt Laura, for whom his father had built it, and Forster and his mother settled there at the end of 1925. He bought a neighbouring wood to forestall developers. Alice died in March 1945, and Forster on returning from India found that he had to give up the house, which was leasehold. Shortly afterwards he made his home at King’s College, Cambridge.
