of a scene from Baudouin’s series ‘The Lovers Surprised’, showing a farmer’s wife berating a young girl, a trifle deshabillée, while her lover escapes up the barn staircase, dedicated to the owner of the original gouache of 1764, Pierre Joseph Victor de Besenval, 1721-1794, Baron de Bronnstatt, Governor of Haguenau in Alsace, with his arms at the foot, 15¾” x 10¾” on semi-stiff paper, Première Cour de Quinze Vingts, Paris, 1767 A strong composition, the figures well contrasted with each other and with the boar seen through the opening. Baudouin worked in Boucher’s atelier and married his daughter. Very few of his originals have survived, but through fine engravings such as the present they are valuable for the history of costume and the decorative arts of his time. Choffard was largely self taught. He was without rival in designing a fleuron, a heading, a frame or a garland, and engraved the culs-de-lampe for the La Fontaine Fables of 1762. Historian of French engraving, 1804, he lived to engrave portraits of both Louis XV and Bonaparte as First Consul.
